Camping With An Instant Pot – Meal Preparation Made Easy

As we plan our year long adventure across the country one of the things that we have considered is camping with an Instant Pot.

We use our 6 quart Instant Pot Pressure Cooker several times a week when we are at home.

6 quart instant pot
When cooking at home we use the 6 quart Instant Pot Duo.

This method of cooking saves us a ton of time. In fact, we are able to make meals that typically take hours to prepare in a fraction of the time.

For instance, we can cook dried beans and have them on the table and ready to eat in just over an hour. And the best part of all, there is no pre-soaking required!

And we no longer have to wait hours for our pot roast to cook all day in a slow cooker.

Not to mention that we can make easy weeknight meals like Chicken and Rice and Fettuccine Alfredo in under 30 minutes.

So as we try to plan on how we are going to cook meals while we are in our T@B 400 camper, the Instant Pot has taken center stage.

What Size Instant Pot?

Our teardrop camper has significant storage space inside. However, we knew we would have to pair down some kitchen items while we are on the road.

Because we use our 6 quart Instant Pot so often, it is something that we really wanted to take camping.

But we decided that the 6 quart was just too big for our camper. We needed to conserve space in the cabinets for other essentials.

The 3 quart Instant Pot fits nicely on both the counter and under the cabinet of our T@B 400 camper.

That is when we looked into other options.

With just the two of us traveling and having little room to store leftovers, we knew that it wasn’t practical camping with our current Instant Pot.

But lucky for us, Instant Pot also has a smaller counterpart. After looking at the size of the 3 quart Instant Pot, we knew we had the perfect match for our trip!

Not only is the perfect size for cooking for two people. It also securely fits on the bottom shelf of the lower kitchen cabinet.

Now we can continue to use an Instant Pot while we are camping!

Power Required

Because we won’t be in the same camping location for more than 2 days at a time the Instant Pot will be our main source of meal preparation.

We will often be staying at Harvest Host locations which isn’t always conducive to outside grilling.

And of course, we won’t have a fire pit to cook over a campfire.

campfire breakfast
Campfire cooking isn’t always possible when traveling.

Yes, we have our stove top, propane burners inside the camper. But we needed an external source of cooking to help conserve the gas.

Therefore, our Instant Pot will be used for the majority of our meals.

Because it requires 110 power, we will either have to be plugged in to shore power or use our external Inergy solar generator for it to work.

We knew that it would work fine as long as the camper was plugged in to 30 amp service. However, we weren’t ‘sure how the Instant Pot would work when plugged into the solar generator.

So last week we gave it a trial run. And we are happy to report it worked!

And best of all, it didn’t drain the generator power at all!

Instant Pot Camping Meals

So now the fun begins to plan meals while we begin camping with an Instant Pot.

We know that we will be making oatmeal and egg bites for breakfast.

instant pot meals
Making meals in the Instant Pot will continue as we are camping.

Lunches will consist of chicken breasts that we make to top our garden salads. And we can make a quick soup in it as well for a complete soup and salad meal.

As for dinner, the possibilities are endless. From rice dishes, macaroni and cheese, and pulled pork, there are many delicious options that we can choose from.

And to satisfy Jim’s sweet tooth, we can even make cheesecake, brownies, sweet breads and cakes!

If you have any experience camping with an Instant Pot and have tips or recipes to share, feel free to email them at livesimple@livesimplenow.com.

And We Have A Winner – The Camper Has A Name!

It’s official, the camper has a name!

I have to say, we were a bit overwhelmed with all of the great suggestions, comments and emails sent in over the last week to help us name our nuCamp TAB400 Camper.

Launch Day Is Getting Closer….The Countdown Continues…

As we told you in last week’s Simple Tour Weekly Update (See : 5/13 – Name The Trailer Contest), we just didn’t realize what a tradition it was for campers to name their home away from home.

But when we found out, we decided to come up with a little contest to see who could help us name ours.

It was unbelievable how many great entries came in! And did we ever have a tough time deciding from all of them!

“The Coop”, “Pea Pod” and “Fearless” were just a few of our favorites from the hundreds sent in.

name for our camper
The Coop was one of the suggestions we really liked. It certainly would have reminded us a bit of home and our chicken coop at the farm.

And The Camper Has A Name…

But in the end, there was one entry that we both couldn’t pass up.

Mary and I have always both been dreamers. And we certainly believe in the power of goals. and turning dreams into reality.

And so it was that we both agreed that CS Allen’s suggestion as “Dreamcatcher” will be the new name of our nuCamp Tab400 camper!

We just both really loved the idea of having the camper named in honor of dreams.

camper has a name

After all, traveling to see all 50 states and meet so many wonderful people has forever been a dream of ours – and we are certainly “catching it” with the camper and this trip!

Not only did the name really resonate with both of us, it also allows us to use the @ symbol for the “A” in the name, something many nuCamp TAB Camper owners love to do.

So with that, the official name of “DRE@MC@TCHER” will be lettered onto the back of our camper. And underneath it, we will include the little inscription below to help inspire those that happen to be driving behind our little TAB Camper.

“Right Now, You Are Following Our Dream. Make Today The Day You Start Following Yours!”

A Big Thank You!

Thank you again CS ALLEN for the coming up with such a great name for us! And when you get a chance, please email us at livesimple@livesimplenow.com with your contact info so we can plan a stop and a dinner with you!

We are really looking forward to seeing just where we might be heading to meet you.

And a big thank you to all of you who sent in a name for us to consider. It was so much fun seeing all of the great ideas and names.

Just 112 more days from today until we hit the road to see America – and CS Allen of course as well!

Until next week’s update – Happy Traveling! Jim and Mary

Naming Our Teardrop Camper – A Contest To Find The Perfect Name!

We need your help naming our teardrop camper!

It didn’t take us long to figure out that nearly every long-time RV owner names their camper.

As we ventured out over the last few weeks for a couple of camping trip test runs, we were surprised to find fellow RV owners asking us what we had named our Tab 400 teardrop camper.

State Park
We had no idea that most folks come up with a name for their camper, but we do now!

And sadly, we didn’t have an answer for them.

The thought of naming our teardrop camper had really never crossed our minds.

But obviously, after being approached no less than 5 times on the first few days, we certainly need to come up with one now!

Naming Our Teardrop Camper

So ever since taking those first few trial runs, we have been bouncing all kinds of names off of each other.

And, unfortunately, we just haven’t found one that really captures what this 50 state, 365 day tour of the United States is all about for us.

Naming Our Teardrop Camper
We have tried and tried to come up with a name – but to no avail. Now we are asking for your help with a little contest.

On one hand, it is about following our dreams and goals, and making them happen while you can.

And it is certainly all about that!

On the other hand, this trip is also about having the opportunity to see the sights and sounds of America, all while expanding our own horizons.

We can’t wait to meet folks from all over – including followers, friends, family, fellow gardeners, and many we don’t yet even know!

So how do you capture that in a name for a camper that we will call home for an entire year?

A Little Contest To Help…

So we thought we would ask for your help! And have a little fun in the process.

We need to come up with a name for our Tab 400 Teardrop that captures the spirit of this trip.

contest for naming the teardrop camper
We thought we would have a little fun with a “Name the Camper Contest”

The details:

If you have an idea for naming our camper, simply let us know in the comment section below, or email us at livesimple@livesimplenow.com

Since we will be traveling around the entire country, we have decided to create a little reward for whoever helps us come up with the name we end up selecting.

For starters, we will include your hometown on our 50 state tour.

And then, to have a little more fun, meet up with you and a guest of your choice for a dinner ( our treat) at a local restaurant in your hometown.

naming our teardrop camper
From sea to shining sea, out trip will take us to all 50 states.

And finally, we will also include a signed copy of each of our first two books, and a first-edition signed copy of our third book about the trip when completed. ( And most likely, a little mention in the book about the event!)

It will be our way of saying “Thank You” for helping us name our travelling home!

So let us know your thoughts and help us come up with the perfect name!

We will reveal our winning choice with next Monday evening’s weekly article.

It also gives us plenty of time over the next few months to try out a few small trips with the teardrop camper to prepare for the journey.

But as the day for leaving draws closer and closer, we are more excited than ever to start this amazing trip!
